BMW.de Banned From Google For Using 'Doorway Pages'
Wow, Google really don't like their listings being 'abused'. Google discovered that BMW Germany had been using 'Doorway Pages', pages which are stuffed full of keywords that thesite feels a need to be optimized for; however, as opposed to realpages, this doorway is only displayed to the Googlebot. Human visitorswill be immediately redirected to another page upon visit.
When Google discovered this they reduced BMW.de's Page Rank down to 0, which means that no BMW.de pages will appear near the top of listings.
I wonder sometimes though, whether Google is playing fair in all this. When is a SEO technique acceptable? The aim of all SEO is to get higher rankings - I don't think that banning people because you don't like some SEO methods, but then ...
Connected Internet Now Available In Nine Languages!
I've been noticing in my traffic stats that quite a lot of readers have been translating my pages using Google, so I've added some code thanks to Digital Inspiration which will make it easier for international visitors to use my site.
A couple of methods for translating webpages are listed. I went for the World Lingo option as Google indexes the static URLs translated by World Lingo. This means that all pages will now appear on Google even while searching fornon-English terms. The translated pages can even be bookmarked.
A number of languages are available. So far I've added French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. I will add Dutch, Greek and Russian as soon as I find the right sized flags.
How Much Storage Is Enough?
Techdigest have just written a feature about a media PC from EPC which offers the following hard drive choices - 300GB, 600GB, 1TB and a whopping great 2TB. This is the first time I've seen a system offered with TBs of storage.
When I built my new PC I put in two 250GB hard drives and I thought I was being excessive as my old system only had 210GB of storage. However, I've already filled one drive and I'm filling the other one so fast that I'm debating buying a 500GB drive. I think what I will do in the short-term is start putting stuff that doesn't need sharing around the flat on my modded Xbox which has a 200GB drive.
What's driving this crazy growth? Windows XP Media Center ...
New Service Provides Access To Gmail On Your Phone
Previously the only way to access Gmail on your phone was if you had a POP3 client on your phone, and by following these instructions. Although this method allows you to access your emails, it doesn't allow you to utilise the full tagging and search capabilities of Gmail and it also doesn't sync with your web-based account so emails will stay unread even if you read them on your phone.
There is now a simpler way to access Gmail on your phone which doesn't seem to be promoted anywhere yet by Google, which provides all of the useful features we've come to love from Google as well as some new ones.
Essential Reading: SEO & Adsense Optimisation Tips From....Google
Finally some SEO advice that can be validated. There are so many 'experts' on the subject of SEO that I'm never sure if changes I've made are having a positive or negative effect on my rankings.
Well, these tips are definitely bankers as they came out in an interview Matt Cutts, a senior Google engineer did with Performancing.
The tips he gave on how to optimise traffic are all very useful:
- Take the time to read Google's webmaster guidelines
- Don't bother with year/month/day in blog urls; Just use the first few words from the title of the post in the url
- Don't try to rank for a huge phrase at first - pick a smaller niche and get to beknown as an expert there, and ...
Restoring Old Webpages
Suhasw spotted that one of my old posts has disappeared off my blog. This has happened a few times to me for no apparent reason and it made me think - is there any way of viewing old versions of webpages?
I know that Google operates a cache, but this is no good to me as my site tends to get crawled everyday. Do any other search engines or sites specialise in providing older caches?
